JOHN YOUNGJohn started his love of music at an early age. At age twelve his grandparents bought him an old upright piano and soon after he started taking piano lessons. In junior high and high school John joined band starting with the Bass Clarinet, working his way through several instruments before eventually landing on Oboe. He attended Georgia Southern University for Oboe performance and a minor in piano. After college he started focusing on singing taking voice lessons with Walter Huff and getting into the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus in their tenor section under the late Maestro Robert Shaw. He also joined the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus where he became the staff composer and arranger and would eventually become the assistant conductor. In the early 1990’s John was invited by Walter Huff to sing in his first opera with the Atlanta Opera in “Carmen”. It seemed the older John got the stronger his desire for music knowledge and his love of music grew. He eventually moved to New York City where he pursued a singing career full time. He was there six years as a freelance singer traveling the world performing with prestigious organizations such as the Trinity Wall street Choir, the Collegiate Chorale and the Wooster Group. His biggest challenge, though, would be battling and winning his fight against cancer which damaged his voice and eventually ending his singing career. Fast forward to the present where John’s love of music is still so strong. John has decided to channel all his knowledge and love of music into composing and conducting. Because of his vast musical background he is comfortable tackling most commission requests! John is currently a member of ASCAP, Opera America, American Composers Forum and the National Association of Composers USA. He currently resides in Sarasota, FL with his husband and 2 dogs and works for the Sarasota Opera.
