PREFACE:
“The Nightingale” is composed so that any youth program of any size would be able to perform it.  It casts two adult leads (a coloratura soprano and a baritone) with ten roles for young singers.  While most youth ensembles usually have more girls than boys, I’ve written the youth roles so either boys or girls could sing them.  The only exception is the Kitchen Girl, which a girl should sing.  The other nine youth roles could be girls' or pants roles.  I’ve also written the chorus so that it could be sung as SA, SAT, SATB, all in unison or ANY configuration your organization has.  There are also several little spoken lines for young performers, so they play a role in the production.  The orchestra can either be a small chamber orchestra as written, a full string section, piano and flute or just piano!  I invite you to think creatively and to find a way to make this charming and important opera work for you. I hope you enjoy “The Nightingale” as much as I did composing it!
